Case Study G : Process
Engineering (Coating Line)
This case study describes, in
general detail, the development of a technology modification to
an existing automated coating line. The coating line is designed
to apply adhesive and particulate matter to two sides of a flat
aluminium tube to be used in brazed aluminium heat
exchangers.
A change in the adhesive type necessitated
the development of a new application method with spray nozzles and a new drying
system as well as changes to the PLC program. A
formal development program was implemented
which required tubes, coated based on various parameters,
to be assembled in a core and brazed. The completed units were then
tested to determine structural performance characteristics thereby
providing a means to measure adhesive and process performance.
Parameters were progressively finalised for production
implementation.
All
usual
stringent automotive industry process Quality Assurance (QA)
requirements were met, including FMEA (Failure
Mode Effects Analysis), HAZOP (Hazardous Operation) and product
testing to required standards.
